Old orchards of full sized trees are an important feature of the Gloucestershire countryside, providing a vital habitat for flora and fauna alike. Tragically, 75% of such orchards have been lost in the last fifty years. By valuing these apples for juicing and cider making, we are helping to preserve the remaining orchards. At Day’s Cottage, we are maintaining our existing orchards, such as the one illustrated below planted in 1912 by Great Aunt Lucy.

We have also planted more than 350 new trees of fifty old or local varieties. To date, we have also planted 80 trees in the Gloucestershire Museum Orchard at Brentlands Farm in Brookthorpe. When completed, it will contain specimens of all the 86 known varieties of Gloucestershire apples.
